MARIIA BYKOVA

Ukraine

I enjoy creating detailed drawings of architectural objects, organic shapes, and letters using a dip pen, inks, and watercolours. Sometimes I like to take my iPad and make my versions of great works of art. Since none of us has been able to travel at all for the last year, I started drawing houses from places I’d like to visit one day. I was inspired by great artist Tommy Kane, he did the same and called it Vircations, virtual vacations. I like the quote by Paul Klee: Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see. That is how my creative process works – I learn to see. The more I draw, the better I see and understand things. I was always attracted to visual arts and fascinated by the process of capturing images. For a decade (2004-2014) I was a professional photographer, working with galleries, museums, and artists in Ukraine. I photographed exhibitions, paintings, sculptures, and artists’ studios. My work from that period has been published in various books and art catalogues. Being in this environment naturally led to my involvement in several collaborative projects with painters. After this, I realized that I was really interested in drawing. Since 2015 I dedicated more time to drawing and advancing my skills. I especially enjoy the challenge of drawing nature, architecture, and letters.
